This letter, dated October 1, 1863, is from James M. Boyer, Deputy Provost Marshal of Chariton County, Missouri, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Boyer writes to Comingo regarding the apprehension of several military deserters. Attached to the document is a note from Brig. Gen. O. Guitar, the commanding officer of two of the deserters, along with correspondence between Col. E.B. Alexander and Asst. Adj. Gen. J.A. Campbell.

From James Montgomery to George L. Stearns

James Montgomery writes a letter from Mound City, Kansas to George L. Stearns on May 8, 1861. He reports that, “We are in a perilous position here, and have not ammunition enough to make a respectable fight.” He says that he has organized a regiment to help defend Kansas against pro-slavery Missourians, whose troops are camped along the border of Linn and Bourbon counties. He mentions that an Osage Indian chief attacked some of these troops, then “tied them with ropes to the Horns of his Saddles and dragged them out of the country.” Montgomery asks for Stearns’s assistance in acquiring arms and declares that, “If we have to fight, we will carry the war out of Kansas.”

This letter, dated November 24, 1863, is from William McNeill Clough, Attorney and Notary Public in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Clough responds to Comingo's request for information about a Kansas resident named Daniel Woodson. He states that Woodson has not been in Kansas for a long time and is probably "within the Confederate lines in Virginia." He adds that he is enclosing a copy of the Kansas statutes regarding disloyal citizens.

This telegram was sent from Capt. W.E. Prince at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to Maj. R.T. Van Horn on August 23, 1861. Prince instructs Van Horn to "destroy everything" if forced to "abandon position." He also tells Van Horn to "continue work on gun" and to "communicate with Lexington and obtain Grahams Company ordered by me to this place."

Report on Price's Raid

James Henry Lane wrote this report ca. October 1864 about his role in the campaign against Price's Raid. Lane states that he accompanied Gen. Blunt, Col. Moonlight, Col. Jennison, and Gen. Curtis on an expedition into Missouri to impede Sterling Price and his forces. Lane describes the Second Battle of Lexington, the Second Battle of Independence, the Battle of Byram's Ford, the Battle of Westport, and the Battle of Little Blue River.
