Title: From Thomas E. Ewing to Thomas Carney
Description: This telegram, dated August 27, 1863 was sent by Brig. Gen. Thomas E. Ewing in Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas Gov. Thomas Carney. Ewing writes: “I ask you to use your influence & authority to prevent any expedition of citizens or militia organizing in Leavenworth for a Raid into Missouri.”

Title: From O.C. Stewart to John W. Geary
Description: O.C. Stewart, mayor of Lecompton, Kansas, writes a letter to Gov. John W. Geary on October 11, 1856. Stewart asks Geary to send troops to Lecompton to seize an illegal supply of liquor that someone has been selling to soldiers.

Title: From John A. Bushnell to Eugenia Bronaugh
Description: On September 27, 1864, John A. Bushnell writes from Calhoun, Missouri to Eugenia Bronaugh in Hickory Grove, Missouri. John describes his recent trip to Clinton, Missouri and states that executions have been ordered against him. However, he does not think court will be in session because “the news of the papers and the moves of the troops in this state show something is up. Various rumors are afloat about which I would write if it was safe.”

Description: This is Mulford Rose's Oath of Loyalty to the United States. Rose, a 35-year-old resident of Liberty, Missouri, states that he was born in Pennsylvania and that he served in the militia in Kansas during the Civil War. The oath, labeled No. 33 in a bound volume, was signed by Rose in 1866.

Title: From James M. Boyer to A. Comingo
Description: This letter, dated October 21, 1863, is from James M. Boyer, Deputy Provost Marshal of Chariton County, Missouri, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Boyer states that he is forwarding Comingo correspondence from Thomas H. Price, a colonel in the "Rebel army." Boyer also gives Comingo the name of a citizen who Capt. Standley believes has evaded military enrollment.

Description: This is William A. Morton's 1866 Oath of Loyalty to the United States. Morton, a 54-year-old Kentucky native, states that he has lived in Missouri for 24 years and served in the U.S. army during the war. He also says he used his influence "to prevent persons going into rebellion." The oath is No. 196 in a bound volume.

Title: From Frederick Starr to Dear Father & All the Others
Description: On November 29, 1854, Frederick Starr writes to "Dear Father & all the others.” Starr describes attending a meeting of the Platte County, Missouri Self Defensive Association “in order to clear my character.” Starr recounts that Mr. Vineyard accused him of interfering with local slave owners and teaching at a school for slaves. In his defense, Starr explains how this small school came to be established, naming each of his students and the masters who permitted them to attend. Starr notes that the school was discontinued after “there was some disturbance attempted through the papers.”

Title: From Fred L. Haywood to Dear Sister Loesa
Description: This letter, dated April 6, 1863, is from Fred L. Haywood, a soldier in the 1st Minnesota Battery, McArthur’s Division, Army of the Tennessee, to his sister Loesa. He writes from Louisiana, where both his regiment and the 1st Kansas Regiment are camped. He tells his sister that the 1st Kansas Regiment recently discovered, upon the death of one of their sergeants, that the sergeant was a woman: “You can imagine their astonishment . . . She was brave as a Lion in battle . . . She would have been promoted to a Lieutenancy in a few days if she had lived.”

Description: This sketch, originally published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on August 24, 1861, depicts the Battle of Wilson's Creek. Title: From Eugenia Bronaugh to John A. Bushnell
Description: This letter, dated June 10, 1864, is from Eugenia Bronaugh at Hickory Grove, Missouri, to John Bushnell. Eugenia expresses her gratitude that “Dear Friends” remained safe – presumably in battle – on May 4th and writes that “we should all pray that this cruel war may soon be over.” She tells John she longs for him to visit, but warns him to be careful and to attempt a visit only if he thinks it “prudent.”

Description: This September 22, 1856 letter is from J.M. Kingsbury in Kansas City, Missouri to J.J. Webb in Santa Fe. Kingsbury writes that Kansas Territory is still plagued by "difficulties" and that Congress has passed the Army Bill. He expresses hope that the new governor of Kansas, John W. Geary, will "succeed in quieting things there and be able to carry out the law."

Title: Diary of C.T. Kimmel
Description: This is an excerpt from the diary of C.T. Kimmel, an assistant surgeon in the 2nd Missouri State Militia Cavalry. The entries, dated May 10 – June 2, 1865, describe Kimmel mustering out of service and returning home to Chariton County, Missouri. He mentions nearby guerrilla warfare, and writes about mourning the death of President Lincoln. Attached is an invitation to a New Year’s Union Ball on December 31, 1865 in Brunswick, Missouri.

This disbursement of clothing was done under witness of Lieutenant James J. Akard.
