Description: This military document lists the names of enlisted men belonging to Company "A" Eighth Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry, whose horses have been inspected, appraised and branded by J.F. Barstow, Inspector acting under orders of Col. William Meyers, Chief Quartermaster, St. Louis Mo.

Title: Thomas Coleman (Cole) Younger
Description: Charcoal portrait of Cole Younger dressed in suit coat, vest, shirt, and tie. Cole Younger was active in several Civil War battles and a member of Quantrill's guerrillas when they raided Lawrence, Kansas, August 21, 1863, and was part of the Baxter Springs massacre, October 6, 1863. After the war, he joined with Frank and Jesse James in several robberies. After the Northfield, Minnesota, bank robbery on September 7, 1876, he was arrested and sent to prison at Stillwater, Minnesota. He was granted a full pardon in 1903. He died March 21, 1916, at Lee's Summit, Missouri, and is buried in the Lee's Summit Cemetery.

Description: This military document is a collection of receipt rolls of clothing, camp, and garrison equipment for the use of the Missouri State Militia 8th Cavalry Regiment Company "A" that shows the transfer of items in between Lieutentant S. B. Shubert, Captain David D. Stockton, Lieutenant James J. Akard, Lieutenant Thomas A. Wakefield, Lieutenant T. E. Gray, and Captain Julius Glade.

Title: From Mary Jane Peery to My Dear Sister
Description: This letter, dated October 11, 1865, is from Mary Jane Peery to her sister. Peery writes that her husband, the preacher J.T. Peery, has refused to take an Oath of Loyalty to the United States Government. She mentions that Confederate sympathizers have encountered difficulty in Missouri following the Civil War, but declares that "a great many of our preachers . . . say they do not intend to take the oath. The Northerners still hold our church and parsonage in Independence and say they will not give it up."

Title: From John A. Bushnell to Eugenia Bronaugh
Description: In a July 20, 1864 letter from Calhoun, Missouri, John A. Bushnell tells Eugenia Bronaugh of Hickory Grove, Missouri, that he plans to travel to Sedalia and St. Louis. He says that he will return within two weeks unless he does not feel safe. He expresses a longing to return to his normal life and his business, for “this life of uncertainty, suspense and danger does not suit me.” He adds that he hopes for peace, but does not feel optimistic.

Description: G. B. Shubert was Quartermaster in Lebanon, Missouri for the Missouri State Militia, 8th Regiment Cavalry. Handwritten on the front is, "Yours truly, G. B. Shubert."

Title: General Orders, No. 17
Description: Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis issued General Order No. 17 from the Headquarters of the Department of the Missouri in St. Louis on March 5, 1863. The order authorizes medical officers to employ "contraband, and other men or women of African descent" as cooks, nurses, laundresses, or servants in military hospitals. The order was signed by Assistant Adjutant General H.Z. Curtis.

Title: John Thrailkill
Description: Charcoal portrait of John Thrailkill in suit coat, vest, shirt, and tie. Discrepancies exist concerning John Thrailkill and his participation in the Civil War. He is often confused with James Thrailkill. According to National Archives records, John Thrailkill first joined the Missouri State Guard and later enlisted in the 1st Missouri Cavalry as a private on December 25, 1861. His Civil War career is varied but he did command a number of guerrillas during the battle of Centralia, Missouri, September 27, 1864. At the end of the war, Thrailkill accompanied General Shelby to Mexico, where it appears Thrailkill remained until his death in 1898.

Title: From William C. Connett, Jr. to James L. Thornberry
Description: This letter, dated April 28, 1855, was written by William C. Connett, Jr. in Sparta, Missouri to James L. Thornberry. William discusses the recent Kansas election and the “overthrow” of the Free Soil party, stating that he would not want to remain in Missouri if Kansas became a free state. He declares that the current political situation would improve if “you people of the free states let us alone in the management of our own domestic affairs.”

Title: From John A. Bushnell to Eugenia Bronaugh
Description: On October 26, 1864, John A. Bushnell writes from Calhoun, Missouri to Eugenia Bronaugh in Hickory Grove, Missouri. John refers to a fight “at Clinton yesterday,” and adds that several local men have joined the Confederates; John himself has been “sworn and paroled.” John predicts that “bands of men” will soon be “robbing and plundering” on the order of Bushwhackers and other groups. He advises Eugenia to hide her valuables and “any letters you do not want read” in case her house is searched. John writes of hearing rumors about the whereabouts of General Price’s army.

Title: General Orders, No. 34
Description: Maj. Gen. Samuel Curtis issued General Order No. 34 from the Department of the Missouri Headquarters in St. Louis on May 4, 1863. The order details the proceedings of a recent Military Commission in St. Joseph, Missouri, where several citizens were tried for war crimes, including disloyal conduct, violation of the conduct of war, bearing arms against the Government, violation of the Oath of Allegiance, and disturbing the peace of Union men. The order was signed by Assistant Adjutant General A.V. Colburn.

Title: Missouri State Militia General Order No. 3
Description: By order of Major John Cosgrove, an unknown author provides instructions on how long horses are to be allowed to graze. This General Order also instructs commanding officers to provide sufficient guard to prevent horses from escaping.

Title: Benjamin (Ben) Broomfield
Description: Charcoal portrait of Ben Broomfield with pullover shirt typical of the guerrillas, hat, and rifle. Ben Broomfield was with Quantrill and Bill Anderson, who "called him his own Indian." Broomfield was part Comanche. He took part in the Lawrence, Kansas, massacre on August 21, 1863. Facts don't correlate about his death. Broomfield was killed either in 1863 or 1864.
