As February 1864 dawned, the cold winter and the Civil War continued to exact misery on the residents of Missouri and Kansas. John A. Bushnell and Eugenia Bronaugh, fiancés separated by wartime circumstances, continued their correspondence and contemplated taking the risk of visiting one another.

One hundred fifty years ago, Kansans and Missourians warily greeted the fourth year of the secession crisis and Civil War. Along the border shared by the two states, the fall of 1863 had brought a culmination of the guerrilla warfare conducted by pro-Union “jayhawkers” from the Kansas side and pro-Southern “bushwhackers” from Missouri.
