• Marais des Cygnes Massacre (May 19, 1858)

A ravine at this site was the location of one of the last acts of Bleeding Kansas violence prior to the Civil War. Charles Hamilton led a band of Missourians to kill five Free-Staters in retribution against jayhawkers for previous conflicts, including a prior incident with the jayhawker James Montgomery.
