Along the way she and her traveling companions visited relatives. Sue writes of staying with Tom, a relative in Linneus who owns several slaves: “They have a black girl as large as I am.”

Title: 1860 Missouri Census Table
Description: This ca. 1860 printed document presents the results of the 1860 Missouri census, showing the population of whites, “free colored” and slaves in each county. The table lists the total state population as 1,182,012, with 1,063,599 whites, 3,572 Free Colored, and 114,931 slaves. Lafayette County has the largest slave population with 6,374 slaves. The table also reveals a small American Indian population in Gasconade and Jackson Counties.

Description: On December 13, 1863, John P. Scott writes from St. Louis to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal for the 6th District of Missouri, in Lexington, Missouri. Scott says he heard a rumor "that I am enrolled in Saline County under the conscription act," when he has actually fled the county out of fear for his personal safety. He asks Comingo to transfer his enrollment to St. Louis, and explains that he is part of the second class draft, "being forty four and a half years old."

Comingo, Provost Marshal for the 6th District of Missouri, in Lexington, Missouri. Boyer describes the evidence against four deserters he recently turned over to Department Headquarters: Charles G. Kuhn, Henry Lees, Frank Mortiz, and Daniel G. Bently. Boyer inquires why Henry Lees, whom he calls "a deserter of the worst kind on account of his using his best efforts to get others to desert," has been "parolled or furloughed to the limits of Macon City by the authorities there."

Vaughan states, “I have examined all the testimony . . . there is no foundation in truth for the charge against them.”
