At Kansas City in November and December of 1863, and under the authority of Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr., charges were brought against Captain Lyman D. Rouell, commander of the 2nd Colorado Volunteers, Company F. The charges included "Drunkenness on duty," "Conduct unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman," and "Disobedience of Orders." Due to conflicting testimonies from witnesses and an incomplete transcript, the documentation of the proceedings leaves modern readers with a number of unanswered questions.
