This letter, dated October 10, 1861 is from Lewis Stafford in Chillicothe, Missouri to Kate Newland. Stafford, a member of the 1st Kansas Infantry, Company E, expresses pride in his regiment and mentions their participation in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. He laments, however, that the regiment has lost a number of soldiers: “What sad havock war makes with the lives and health of men.”

This ca. 1860 printed document presents the results of the 1860 Missouri census, showing the population of whites, “free colored” and slaves in each county. The table lists the total state population as 1,182,012, with 1,063,599 whites, 3,572 Free Colored, and 114,931 slaves. Lafayette County has the largest slave population with 6,374 slaves. The table also reveals a small American Indian population in Gasconade and Jackson Counties.

This is a list of men from Monroe Township, Livingston County, Missouri who volunteered in the United States military between 1861 and 1864. These volunteers enlisted in the 11th and 19th Missouri Cavalry regiments; the 18th, 23rd, 25th, and 33rd Missouri Infantry regiments; the 6th Missouri State Militia; and the 8th Iowa Infantry. The list is addressed to the Adjutant General of the State of Missouri and is signed by Preston Anderson and William H. Anderson on September 6, 1864.
