The Jackson County Historical Society, a not-for-profit organization, has roots dating to 1909 when Jackson County pioneers enjoyed Independence Day celebrations on the shaded lawn of the John B. Wornall Home. The Society formally organized in 1940 and officially incorporated in 1958. Throughout, the Society has and remains dedicated to the preservation and understanding of our heritage, and to promoting the study, appreciation, and interpretation of local and regional history. That mission is supported by membership dues, tax-deductible bequests and donations, and grants.

The Jackson County Historical Society offers a variety of products, services and programs at sites they own and/or operate. A bookstore offers books, and the museum giftshop offers souvenirs . . . all relating to local history. Plus the Society's Speakers' Bureau makes available educational programs that highlight various aspects of the county's 175+ year history.

Since 1958, the Society has owned and operated the 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum, 271 North Main Street, Independence, Missouri which tells the story of outlaws, lawmen (and women) and frontier justice in Jackson County, Missouri. Temporary exhibits also showcase varied chapters in Jackson County's rich history. The museum is open to the public March through October and December each year.

The Jackson County Historical Society also maintains a massive Archive and Research Library that have and continue to be collected through generous donations. Millions of original documents and thousands of original photographs about Kansas City and Jackson County help tell the stories of the people, places and events of Jackson Countians. The behind-the-scenes work of the Archives and Research Library is assisted by an arsenal of volunteers and regular college interns. The Society's Archives and Research Library is located in the Jackson County Truman Courthouse on historic Independence Square, and is available weekdays, strictly by advanced appointment.
